Deer

Something gained without force. The deer carries Wood and is associated with longevity and with the scholar's retirement to the hills. In Chinese the word sounds like the word for an official salary — prosperity arriving by appointment rather than by seizure.

In the traditional vocabulary it is not read as a warning. Something gained without force. The animal is treated as a description of a situation — usually involving timing or a person — not as a prediction. Where the tiger is force that must be handled, the deer is the opposite case: an outcome that arrives precisely because nothing was forced.

Traditional readings treat the deer as gentle gain. It is the animal of an unforced outcome, which is why it is paired so often with the crane in painting. It is grouped under Wood (木) in the five-element system.
