Crane

Longevity, and the discipline that produces it. The crane is the bird of the immortals in Chinese painting. It carries Metal — the element of refinement and of cutting away — and stands for a long life earned through restraint rather than luck.

In the traditional vocabulary it is not read as a warning. Longevity, and the discipline that produces it. The animal is treated as a description of a situation — usually involving timing or a person — not as a prediction. A standing crane and a flying crane pull in opposite directions: stillness suggests consolidation, flight suggests a reputation travelling beyond the person who built it.

Traditional readings associate the crane with an older mentor, with scholarship, and with the choice to stay with something long enough for it to mature. It is grouped under Metal (金) in the five-element system.
