Rabbit

Caution that is working, and the cost of it. The rabbit is the fourth earthly branch. In the Chinese telling it is not cowardly but attentive — the animal on the moon pounding medicine, associated with longevity and with a long view of time.

In the traditional vocabulary it is not read as a warning. Caution that is working, and the cost of it. The animal is treated as a description of a situation — usually involving timing or a person — not as a prediction. The rabbit tends to appear when someone has been weighing the same decision for long enough that the weighing itself has become the decision.

Traditional readings connect the rabbit to careful judgement and to domestic calm. It is read favourably, but with a note: caution that never converts into action becomes a way of standing still. It is grouped under Wood (木) in the five-element system.
