Rat Personality

Rat personality in the traditional reading is quick, observant and thrifty — qualities that follow from the animal's popular reputation. The personality readings attached to zodiac animals are folk characterisations rather than a formal system: they describe a temperament attributed to the animal, and the tradition treats them as general rather than as individual.

It is one factor among several in the traditional system. Rat personality in the traditional reading is quick, observant and thrifty — qualities that follow from the animal's popular reputation. The year animal is the coarsest of the four pillars — the month, day and hour carry equal weight, and the classical sources never read the year alone. The attribution is a description of reputation, not a mechanism: the tradition has no procedure that derives a person's character from a birth year alone.

The rat's attributed traits — alertness, adaptability, carefulness with resources — come from the observed animal adapted into a human character type. It is grouped under Water (水) in the five-element system.
