Rat — Chinese Zodiac Database
The rat opens the cycle, and the traditional story explains its position by wit rather than by strength. As a zodiac sign it is associated with Water, with the north, and with the first double-hour of the day.
The traditional account has the rat riding the ox and jumping ahead at the finish, which is why it is first despite being smallest. The reading that follows is about timing rather than dominance.
