Pot

A pot is read as transformation by heat — contents changed while contained. Earthenware is Earth, and the pot is one of the oldest traditional images for a process rather than a state. Reading asks what is in it and whether it is cooking.

It points to a function rather than an event. A pot is read as transformation by heat — contents changed while contained. Traditional readings ask what the object is for and whether it is working, rather than treating it as a sign. A pot that will not boil is a commonly reported variant, read as process underway but not yet at the point of change.

An empty pot over a fire and a full one off it are the two standard cases, and the sources read both as timing problems. It is grouped under Earth (土) in the five-element system.
