Bowl

A bowl is read as provision — sustenance in a form meant to be shared or received. Earthen and open, the bowl is a traditional image of what is supplied rather than what is earned. Reading asks who filled it.

It points to a function rather than an event. A bowl is read as provision — sustenance in a form meant to be shared or received. Traditional readings ask what the object is for and whether it is working, rather than treating it as a sign. A bowl that refills itself as you eat is a reported variant, read as provision that keeps pace with the need.

Sources attach importance to the bowl's being filled by another hand, which is what distinguishes it from the cup. It is grouped under Earth (土) in the five-element system.
