Camera

A camera is read as fixing a moment — turning something passing into something held. A Metal instrument of record. Traditional reading asks who is behind it, since the camera assigns the role of observer.

It points to a function rather than an event. A camera is read as fixing a moment — turning something passing into something held. Traditional readings ask what the object is for and whether it is working, rather than treating it as a sign. A camera that will not capture the subject — everything else in focus — is a recorded variant, read as something present but not recordable.

Being photographed and taking the photograph are near-opposites: one describes being fixed, the other deciding what gets fixed. It is grouped under Metal (金) in the five-element system.
