Dog

Loyalty, and its price. The dog is the eleventh earthly branch. It carries Earth and is read as constancy — the animal that stays. In Chinese households it has historically been a guardian rather than a companion animal.

In the traditional vocabulary it is not read as a warning. Loyalty, and its price. The animal is treated as a description of a situation — usually involving timing or a person — not as a prediction. Dog dreams tend to be about specific people — the dog usually stands in for someone whose loyalty the dreamer is currently assessing.

Traditional readings treat the dog as a comment on allegiance: who is standing with you, and what that standing is costing. A hostile dog is read as a broken obligation rather than as danger. It is grouped under Earth (土) in the five-element system.
