The Compatibility Scheme

Zodiac compatibility is computed from the earthly branches, using two mechanisms — the six harmonies and the four three-fold affinity groups. This entry explains the system behind every individual compatibility page: pairings are a property of the twelve branches, and the animals are the mnemonic layer on top.

It is one factor among several in the traditional system. Zodiac compatibility is computed from the earthly branches, using two mechanisms — the six harmonies and the four three-fold affinity groups. The year animal is the coarsest of the four pillars — the month, day and hour carry equal weight, and the classical sources never read the year alone. The three mechanisms are independent, which is why one animal can have harmonious partners from the affinity group and from the harmonies at the same time.

The six harmonies pair six couples of branches. The four affinity groups are trios: rat-dragon-monkey, ox-snake-rooster, tiger-horse-dog, rabbit-goat-pig. Clashes are a third, separate relationship. It is grouped under Earth (土) in the five-element system.
