Qi Sha (七杀)
Qi Sha is the general: raw drive, independence and an appetite for the fight. Where it falls, life involves pressure, competition and repeated tests — and the person is built for them.
The General
At a glance
The star of decisive force — the cut that ends a situation.
Assigned to 庚金 (yang metal), Qi Sha is described as a blade. The classical reading is uncompromising: it is the star of the person who acts first and absorbs the cost, and the tradition treats its presence as a demand for discipline rather than as a sign either way.
What Qi Sha means
七杀 is the General star, and it is the system's principal representative of force. Its classical associations are authority earned through struggle, decisiveness, risk and the pressure that either breaks a chart or produces an unusually strong person from it.
Charts with Qi Sha prominent are typically formed by difficulty rather than despite it. They handle pressure better than almost any other configuration, they are decisive when others hesitate, and they have an unusually high tolerance for conflict when conflict is the correct tool. In crisis professions, in competitive business and in any role where somebody has to walk into a hostile situation, this is the configuration that performs.
The classical difficulty is depletion and isolation. A general is not much loved by the troops and lives in a state of continuous readiness; charts with Qi Sha strong are prone to spending themselves, to treating ordinary situations as contests, and to accumulating the kind of damage that high-pressure lives produce. The traditional remedy is structure and companionship — a channel for the force, and someone who is not an opponent.
From the inside
You are aware that you are unusually hard to move and less aware of how much of your life has been organised as a response to pressure. The specific test worth applying: how many of your current commitments are things you chose, and how many are fights you took because the alternative was losing them. Also worth knowing — you recover from conflict much faster than the people around you, and you can be surprised by the damage a disagreement did to a relationship you assumed was fine.
Where Qi Sha is strong
You are better, not worse, when the stakes are real. There is no substitute for this quality and it is impossible to teach.
You act when others are still deliberating. In any field with real consequences, that is the difference between a plan and an outcome.
You can hold an uncomfortable position for a long time. Most people can hold one for a week.
You do not need approval to proceed, which frees you from the constraint that limits most capable people.
Where it goes wrong
You can convert an ordinary difference of view into a contest, and win it at a cost that was not necessary.
You spend physical and emotional reserves at a rate that no recovery period makes up. The bill arrives later and is not negotiable.
Intensity keeps people at a distance, so the charts with this star are often strong and alone — respected and not much included.
You absorb hits without registering them, which means both your relationships and your health get less maintenance than they need.
At its best
Bright and supported, Qi Sha is the general who wins: authority, achievement, real standing. Unsupported or badly placed, the classical reading is force without a channel — effort, conflict and attrition without the position or the resources to convert them.
Pairings and combinations
With Zi Wei it becomes command with legitimacy. With Wu Qu it is the classic self-made fighting configuration. With Tian Liang the force acquires a protective direction. With Zi Wei or Tian Xiang as the reported pairing, the star converts from soldier into officer — markedly better in every respect.
In the twelve palaces
Hard, decisive and built for pressure, with a life that involves repeated testing. Capable of extraordinary output and prone to treating ordinary life as a series of contests.
The armed forces and police, surgery, emergency work, competitive sport, crisis management, restructuring, founding in hostile markets. Anywhere the job is to hold under pressure; poorly suited to consensus-driven environments.
Strong-willed children who will test you seriously, and a parenting experience that is rarely peaceful. Discipline must be firm and must never become the contest.
An intense inner life under considerable pressure, requiring a real outlet — physical, professional or creative. Without one, this palace placement produces the irritable exhaustion of an unspent force.
Few, close and tested, with a substantial capacity to have made enemies along the way. You respect people who hold their ground and have limited patience for those who do not.
The liver and gallbladder, and injuries from activity in the traditional mapping. Strain accumulates silently and surfaces as injury rather than as illness.
A demanding or absent authority in childhood and a corresponding self-reliance. Early departure from home is characteristic, and the distance is usually formative rather than destructive.
Property is acquired decisively and can be sold with equal speed. Leverage is this placement's characteristic temptation in this area.
Competitive relations with siblings and a family culture of comparison or struggle. Distance is common, and it is usually distance with respect rather than estrangement.
A demanding placement, traditionally read as a marriage requiring a strong partner and a great deal of deliberate gentleness. Two strong charts in this palace can be formidable together and are more commonly exhausting.
Away from home is where this star performs: the further and more demanding the environment, the better the outcome. Staying put suppresses it.
Significant earning through risk, competition and force of will, with correspondingly large swings. This placement makes money in hostile conditions and loses it by over-extending.

Common questions
What does Qi Sha in the Life palace mean?
Drive, decisiveness and a life of pressure. Qi Sha in the Life palace is traditionally read as one of the stronger placements for achievement and one of the hardest on personal comfort — the star of the general, which is a function rather than a reward.
Is Qi Sha a negative star?
It is a force, not a verdict. The classical texts warn about its intensity, and in a chart with support and direction it is one of the most capable configurations in the system. Unsupported, the same star reads as friction, effort and attrition.
What calms Qi Sha?
Traditionally, the imperial and administrative stars — Zi Wei, Tian Xiang, Tian Liang — which convert force into authority. In practice: a structure that gives the drive a sanctioned direction, and somebody close who is not a competitor.
Is Qi Sha good for business?
It is excellent at the competitive parts: entry, negotiation, turnaround, defending a position. It is weaker at the maintenance parts, and charts with this star do well with a systematically-minded partner.
