Rope

Rope is read as connection or binding — what holds things together, and what holds you. Rope sits under Wood in the traditional mapping. The reading turns on tension: a rope taut, slack, fraying or being cut each say something different about a tie.

It points to a function rather than an event. Rope is read as connection or binding — what holds things together, and what holds you. Traditional readings ask what the object is for and whether it is working, rather than treating it as a sign. A rope that runs upward out of sight is a distinct recorded image, read as a connection whose other end you have not identified.

Sources treat rope as ambiguous by design — the same rope ties a boat safely and ties a person. Which it is depends on whether the dream figure is holding it or held by it. It is grouped under Wood (木) in the five-element system.
