Soil

Soil is read as ground that will take what is put into it — Earth in its productive rather than its fixed sense. Earth as medium rather than as obstacle. Traditional reading asks whether it is worked or untouched.

Natural features are read by state and conditions. Soil is read as ground that will take what is put into it — Earth in its productive rather than its fixed sense. Traditional readings look at whether it is calm or disturbed, near or distant. Rich soil that nothing will grow in is a recorded variant, read as capacity present without the right thing put into it.

Sources treat soil as the image of capacity to receive, and its condition — turned, packed, watered — is the whole reading. It is grouped under Earth (土) in the five-element system.
