Lotus

The lotus is read as something clean growing out of unclear conditions — the standard image for that separation. Water plant with a long traditional reading in Chinese and Buddhist sources. The mud-to-flower sequence is the symbol, not the flower alone.

Natural features are read by state and conditions. The lotus is read as something clean growing out of unclear conditions — the standard image for that separation. Traditional readings look at whether it is calm or disturbed, near or distant. A lotus growing in clear water is a reported variant, and traditional readings treat it as the symbol without its defining contrast.

Sources are consistent: the lotus is read for rising unstained from its origin, and its root in mud is a required part of the image rather than a defect. It is grouped under Water (水) in the five-element system.
