Bamboo

Bamboo is read as flexibility with structure — something that bends under load and returns, hollow and jointed. Bamboo is one of the central Chinese plant symbols, classed with Wood but given its own reading for its combination of strength and give.

Natural features are read by state and conditions. Bamboo is read as flexibility with structure — something that bends under load and returns, hollow and jointed. Traditional readings look at whether it is calm or disturbed, near or distant. Bamboo that has been split is a recorded variant, and the traditional reading turns on the joint: bamboo breaks at the node, not between them.

Traditional sources associate bamboo with integrity under pressure and with the scholar's temperament — it is hollow, and it does not break in wind. It is grouped under Wood (木) in the five-element system.
