Tiger

Force that has to be handled, not avoided. The tiger is the third earthly branch and the counterpart to the dragon — where the dragon works through water and sky, the tiger works through ground and muscle. It carries Wood, the element of growth that pushes through obstruction.

In the traditional vocabulary it is not read as a warning. Force that has to be handled, not avoided. The animal is treated as a description of a situation — usually involving timing or a person — not as a prediction. Dreams of tigers cluster around situations with a person in them who holds real power over the dreamer — a parent, a manager, an examiner — rather than around abstract danger.

Traditional readings treat the tiger as raw authority. It can protect or it can threaten, and which one it is depends on whether the dreamer is being chased or is watching from a distance. Neither reading predicts an event. It is grouped under Wood (木) in the five-element system.
