Ox

Work that is slow and does accumulate. The ox is the second earthly branch. It carries Earth and stands for the part of any enterprise that cannot be hurried — ploughing, hauling, the season before the harvest.

In the traditional vocabulary it is not read as a warning. Work that is slow and does accumulate. The animal is treated as a description of a situation — usually involving timing or a person — not as a prediction. The ox is the animal people dream about during the middle of a long project, not the beginning — the part where enthusiasm has gone but the work has not.

Traditional readings treat the ox as reliability. It is read as favourable without being exciting, and the classical note is that its value only appears over time. It is grouped under Earth (土) in the five-element system.
