Butterfly

A change that has already happened. The butterfly is Zhuangzi's question — whether he was a man dreaming of a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming of a man. It carries Wood and belongs to the season when things open.

In the traditional vocabulary it is not read as a warning. A change that has already happened. The animal is treated as a description of a situation — usually involving timing or a person — not as a prediction. The Zhuangzi passage is the reason the butterfly is the one animal in this database that classical Chinese philosophy treats as a problem rather than a symbol.

Traditional readings connect the butterfly to transformation already completed, to romance, and to the instability of identity. It is lighter than the snake: the shedding is over. It is grouped under Wood (木) in the five-element system.
